Wuhan Open: Linette through to first WTA 1000 QF after upset win over Kasatkina
The Pole scored a straight sets win over 8th seed Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 6-3 on Thursday and will meet fourth seed Coco Gauff next
Poland’s Magda Linette upset Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 8 seed, 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center on Thursday.
The Pole broke twice in the first set to claim it 6-2. She broke early in the second to go up 2-0 before Kasatkina put up some resistance and levelled the set at 2-2.
However, another break for Linette was enough for her to wrap up the second set and the win. This was also her third win in seven meetings over the Russian, who had won their last three meetings on the tour.
The victory moves Linette into the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 Series event for the first time in her career at the age of 32.
Linette, ranked No 45, will play American Coco Gauff, the No 4 seed, next. The pair have met only once before, with Gauff winning their first round clash at the 2021 US Open in a three-set battle.
Ahead of her win today, the Pole defeated Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 11 seed (6-2, 6-2) and Ukrainian qualifier Lesia Tsurenko (5-2 ret.).
Kasatkina, ranked No 11, beat American qualifier Bernarda Pera (6-4, 1-6, 6-1) earlier in the week.
