Wuhan Open: Frech upsets Navarro to reach last 16

Pole Magdalena Frech beat American Emma Navarro, the No 6 seed, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to move into the last 16 of the Wuhan Open at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center on Wednesday.
It took Frech more than two hours to cause the upset as Navarro fought hard to break her serve five times. The Pole, however, edged out, breaking the American’s serve six times at an average of 66 percent on second-serve return points.
Frech, ranked No 27, will play the winner of the match between Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 9 seed, and Russian Veronika Kudermetova next.
In the previous round of the Wuhan tournament, the Pole won against Japanese qualifier Mai Hontama (6-0, 6-4).
