Pegula dismisses defending champ Giorgi to reach quarter-finals in Toronto
Jessica Pegula edged out Camila Giorgi 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 on Thursday evening and will play the winner of the match between American Alison Riske-Amritraj and Kazakh Yulia Putintseva in the next round
American Jessica Pegula, the No 7 seed, moved into the last 8 of the National Bank Open by edging out Italian Camila Giorgi 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 at the Aviva Centre in Toronto on Thursday evening.
Pegula, ranked No 7, will face the winner of the match between American Alison Riske-Amritraj and Kazakh Yulia Putintseva next. She avenged a loss to Giorgi in last year’s semi-finals at Montreal, and improves to 6-2 overall against the Italian.
Pegula improves to 27-13 on the season with her triumph. Ahead of her victory, the American beat qualifier Asia Muhammad (6-2, 7-5) in the second round.
Giorgi, ranked No 29, won against No 9 seed Emma Raducanu (7-6, 6-2) and Belgian Elise Mertens (6-3, 7-5) in the previous rounds of the Canadian Open.
