Jessica Pegula sets semi-final clash with Simona Halep at Toronto
Jessica Pegula defeated Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-3 on Friday evening and will face Romanian Simona Halep, the No 15 seed, in the next round
American Jessica Pegula, the No 7 seed, won against Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-3 to move into the semi-finals of the National Bank Open at the Aviva Centre in Toronto on Friday evening.
Pegula, ranked No 7, will face Romanian Simona Halep, the No 15 seed, next.
Pegula, the highest-ranked woman remaining in the draw, has reached back-to-back semi-finals in Canada. She saved a match point in her round of 16 win over Camila Giorgi. She is into her fourth WTA 1000 semi-final.
Earlier in the tournament, the American defeated qualifier Asia Muhammad (6-2, 7-5) and edged out Italian Camila Giorgi (3-6, 6-0, 7-5).
Putintseva, ranked No 46, beat Canadian wildcard Katherine Sebov (3-6, 6-2, 7-5), Spaniard Paula Badosa, the No 4 seed (7-5, 1-0 ret.) and American Alison Riske-Amritraj (6-3, 7-5) in the previous rounds of the Canadian Open.
