Coco Gauff survives a wild one against Rybakina in Toronto
Coco Gauff edged out Elena Rybakina 6-4, 6-7 (8), 7-6 (3) on Wednesday evening. She’ll play the winner of the match between Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the No 6 seed, and Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo in the next round
American Coco Gauff, the No 10 seed, edged out Kazakh Elena Rybakina 6-4, 6-7 (8), 7-6 (3) to move into the last 16 of the National Bank Open at the Aviva Centre in Toronto on Wednesday evening.
Gauff, ranked No 11, will face the winner of the match between Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the No 6 seed, and Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo next.
Gauff failed to convert four match points in the second-set tiebreak against the Wimbledon champion, and she was broken three times in a back and forth third set, before finally converting her fifth match point in the tiebreak to lock down the victory in two hours and 49 minutes.
Gauff improves to 29-14 on the season with her victory, and 14-8 on hard courts.
Ahead of her victory, the 18-year-old American won against qualifier Madison Brengle (6-1, 6-3).
Rybakina, ranked No 27, defeated Czech qualifier Marie Bouzkova (7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-1) in the previous round of the Canadian Open.
