WTA Rankings: Swiatek continues to lead as weekend winners Begu and Pera rise
Swiatek begins her 17th week as world No 1 as there is little change in this week’s top 10 WTA rankings
Poland’s Iga Swiatek continues to lead the latest WTA rankings released on Monday, beginning her 17th week as the world No 1 in women’s tennis.
Swiatek, who won the French Open title in the midst of a staggering 37-match winning streak, returns to the tour this week, playing her home event in Poland where she also organized an exhibition match over the week in support of Ukraine.
The 21-year-old has a lead of more than 3,800 ranking points over her closest rival, second ranked Anett Kontaveit.
The Estonian, who is competing in the Prague Open this week, after reaching the final in Hamburg this past week. With most of the top players not competing at the two WTA events last week – Hamburg and Palermo – there is little change in the top 10 this week.
Swiatek and Kontaveit are followed by Maria Sakkari at No 3, Paula Badosa at No 5, Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur at No 5, Aryna Sabalenka at No 6, Jessie Pegula at No 7, Garbine Muguruza up one spot to No 8, Danielle Collins dropping one spot to no 9 and Emma Raducanu at No 10.
Begu and Pera climb up the WTA rankings after winning titles
Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu and American Bernarda Pera make big jumps in the rankings this week after picking up titles over the weekend.
Begu climbs 12 spots to no 33, her highest ranking in more than five years, after winning her second WTA ttile in Palremo. Pera, who followed up her Budapest title with another one in Hamburg, jumps 27 spots to a new career-high of No 54.
Elsewhere, Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo, a semi-finalist in Palermo, moves up four spots to No 37; 23-year-old Lucia Bronzetti, of Italy, moves up 13 spots to a new career-best No 65; and French teen Diane Parry is up 10 spots to also reach a new peak of No 76.
