WTA Indian Wells: Zheng eclipses Sun to reach last 16

China’s Qinwen Zheng, the No 8 seed, defeated New Zealand’s Lulu Sun 6-4, 7-5 to reach the last 16 of the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Sunday.

The win was revenge for Zheng, who had lost to Sun in the first round at Wimbledon last year and evens their head-to-head at 1-1.

Zheng, ranked No 9 in the world, will play Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the No 18 seed, next. The pair have played twice in the past with one win on each side.

Earlier in the week, the 22-year-old Chinese won against Belarusian Victoria Azarenka (6-3, 6-4).

Sun, ranked No 49, edged out Slovak Rebecca Sramkova (6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (2)) and defeated No 31 seed Linda Noskova (6-1, 6-4) in the previous rounds of the tournament.
