Swiatek returns to action with WTA Finals round-robin win over Krejcikova
The Pole is back and looking to defend her crown
Iga Swiatek returned to action – and staged an epic comeback win against Barbora Krejcikova 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the orange group at the WTA Finals.
The current world No 2 has not played since her defeat at the US Open quarter-finals in September.
And the defending WTA Finals champion knows she needs to win the title in Riyadh with at least two round-robin match wins as well if she is to reclaim top spot in the rankings from Aryna Sabalenka.
Krejcikova was 3-0 up in the second set but her service game deserted her, with four double faults in the last two games. She was clearly struggling with a back injury, stretching it out repeatedly during the decider.
The Czech bravely pushed on, breaking the Swiatek serve and a run of games won to drag it back to 5-2 in the third set.
