WTA Brisbane: Rybakina drops one game in win over Mertens to reach last eight
The Kazakh will meet the winner of the match between No 6 seed Veronika Kudermetova and No 11 seed Anastasia Potapova in the next round
Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the second seed, was in devastating form as she dropped only one game in her win over Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 13 seed, to move into the last eight of the WTA Brisbane International on Thursday.
Rybakina, ranked No 4 in the world and the 2022 Wimbledon champion, needed just 56 minutes to ease past Mertens 6-1, 6-0.
The Kazakh, will face the winner of the match between No 6 seed Veronika Kudermetova and No 11 seed Anastasia Potapova next.
In the previous round, Rybakina defeated Australian qualifier Olivia Gadecki (6-4, 6-1) while Mertens, ranked No 30, beat American Sloane Stephens (2-6, 6-1, 6-3).
