WTA Adelaide: Ostapenko wins seventh career singles title, back in top 10
The 26-year-old will rise to no 10 in the world rankings next week
Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 6 seed, defeated Russian Daria Kasatkina in straight sets to win the Adelaide Open final at the Memorial Drive Tennis Park on Saturday evening.
The former French Open champion needed one hour and 14 minutes to win 6-3, 6-2 and lift the seventh WTA singles title of her career.
The win also moves the 26-year-old, whose best ranking has been No 5, back into the world’s top 10.
Earlier in the week, Ostapenko defeated Romanian Sorana Cirstea (2-6, 6-2, 6-4), Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia (6-4, 5-7, 6-4), Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk (7-5, 6-3) and Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova (6-2, 7-6 (3)).
Kasatkina was playing her first match since Wednesday as she received walkovers in her quarter-final and semi-final rounds. The Russian, ranked No 15, defeated American qualifier Claire Liu (6-4, 6-3), qualifier Anna Kalinskaya (5-7, 6-4, 7-5), German Laura Siegemund (walkover) and American Jessica Pegula, the second seed (walkover) to reach the final.
