Zhang beats Kontaveit as her run continues into quarter-finals
Shuai Zhang edged out Anett Kontaveit 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday afternoon in Cincinnati. Zhang will face the winner of a match between Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka and American wild card Shelby Rogers.
Chinese Shuai Zhang reached the quarter-finals of the Western & Southern Open by edging out Estonian Anett Kontaveit, the second seed, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the Linder Tennis Family Center in Cincinnati on Thursday evening.
Zhang, ranked No 44, will face the winner of the match between Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the No 6 seed, and American wildcard Shelby Rogers next.
Ahead of her victory, the 33-year-old Chinese won against Japanese Naomi Osaka (6-4, 7-5) and Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova (6-3, 6-4).
Kontaveit, ranked No 2, edged out Czech qualifier Tereza Martincova (3-6, 7-5, 6-4) in the previous round of the Cincy Open.
