Italian Jasmine Paolini, the No 5 seed, reached the last 16 of the Western & Southern Open by winning against Russian Anastasia Potapova 7-6 (2), 6-3 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati on Thursday night.
Paolini, ranked No 5, will face Russian Mirra Andreeva next.
Potapova, ranked No 44, defeated Frenchwoman Clara Burel (6-4, 2-6, 6-1) in the previous round of the Cincy Open.
