American Taylor Townsend won against Russian Anastasia Potapova, the No 9 seed, 6-2, 6-2 to reach the second round of the Washington Open at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center.
Townsend, ranked No 78, will play the winner of the match between American qualifier McCartney Kessler and Marie Bouzkova next.
