Marie Bouzkova won against American qualifier McCartney Kessler 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to reach the second round of the Washington Open at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center.
Bouzkova, ranked No 43, will face American Taylor Townsend next.
