American qualifier Amanda Anisimova edged out Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the No 7 seed, 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the Washington Open at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center on Wednesday.
Anisimova, ranked No 176, will face the winner of the match between American Caroline Dolehide and Russian Daria Kasatkina, the second seed, next.
In the previous round of the Washington tournament, the 22-year-old American beat Sloane Stephens (6-3, 7-5).
Pavlyuchenkova, ranked No 33, edged out American Ashlyn Krueger (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) in the first round of the Washington tournament.
