American Mccartney Kessler advanced to the last 16 of the Trophée Clarins when Romanian wildcard Simona Halep retired on Wednesday.
Kessler, ranked No 123, led 5-7, 3-2 when former world No 1 Halep pulled out on Wednesday afternoon, apparently due to a knee issue.
The American will play the winner of the match between top seed Emma Navarro and qualifier Lauren Davis next.
