Transylvania Open: Ruse wins seesaw match to make semifinals
Elena-Gabriela Ruse defeated Emiliana Arango 6-1, 0-6, 6-1 on Friday and will play the winner of the match between Romanian Ana Bogdan, the No 5 seed, and Spaniard Rebeka Masarova, the No 4 seed, in the next round
Romanian wildcard Elena-Gabriela Ruse defeated Colombian Emiliana Arango 6-1, 0-6, 6-1 to reach the semi-finals of the Transylvania Open at the BTarena in Cluj-Napoca on Friday.
Despite a glaring lull in the middle of the match where she conceded a bagel set, the home favourite was able to rally with the crowd behind her, continuing her deep run in Romania.
Ruse, ranked No 188, will face the winner of the match between Romanian Ana Bogdan, the No 5 seed, and Spaniard Rebeka Masarova, the No 4 seed, next.
Earlier in the tournament, the Romanian edged out American Alycia Parks, the second seed (6-2, 1-6, 6-4) and won against Hungarian Anna Bondar (7-6 (4), 6-2).
Arango, ranked No 118, won against Frenchwoman Jessika Ponchet (6-3, 7-6 (4)) and Swiss Jil Teichmann (6-3, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Cluj-Napoca tournament.
