Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, the second seed, reached the last 16 of the Transylvania Open by Verdino when Canadian wildcard Eugenie Bouchard retired on Tuesday evening.
Kalinina, ranked No 45, led 6-3 when Bouchard, ranked No 443, pulled out on Tuesday evening.
Bouchard has a hip problem, she said after the match. “I’m just disappointed to have ended my tournament in Romania this way because I really loved being here in Cluj. I pulled my hip flexor a few days in practice. I tried everything to be ready for this match.”
Kalinina will play Belgian qualifier Ysaline Bonaventure next.
