WTA Toronto: Townsend into second round as Yastremska retires
The American will face the winner of the match between Russian qualifier Erika Andreeva and Canadian wildcard Marina Stakusic in the next round

American lucky loser Taylor Townsend reached the second round of the WTA National Bank Open in Toronto when Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, the No 16 seed, retired at the Aviva Centre on Tuesday.
Townsend, ranked No 71, was leading 6-3, 3-1 when Yastremska, ranked No 27, pulled out of the match due to a shoulder injury. The American came into the tournament after Yulia Putintseva pulled out.
Townsend will play the winner of the match between Russian qualifier Erika Andreeva and Canadian wildcard Marina Stakusic next.
