WTA Toronto: Keys retires injured, sending Stearns into last 16

Peyton Stearns moved into the last 16 of the WTA National Bank Open when No 7 seed Madison Keys retired at the Aviva Centre on Thursday.

Stearns, ranked No 53, led 3-6, 7-5, 3-0 when Keys, ranked No 14, pulled out on Thursday at the Aviva Centre. She was struggling with a similar leg injury to the one she suffered at this year’s Wimbledon.

Stearns will play Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, the No 12 seed, next.

In the previous round of the Rogers Cup, Stearns defeated Russian Anna Blinkova (6-4, 6-3).
