WTA Toronto: Mertens advances to second round
Elise Mertens progressed against Katie Volynets (6-3, 6-1) on Wednesday and will play the winner of the match between Ons Jabeur, the No. 9 seed, and Naomi Osaka next

Belgian Elise Mertens put on a dominant display of tennis against American qualifier Katie Volynets (6-3 6-1) to advance to the second round of the WTA National Bank Open on Wednesday morning.
Mertens, who is ranked No. 35 in the world, will play the winner of the blockbuster match between Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the No. 9 seed, and Japanese wildcard Naomi Osaka next.
