Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 13 seed this week, edged out Marie Bouzkova (5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (1)) to move into the second round of the WTA National Bank Open at the Aviva Centre on Wednesday afternoon, in a very tough test for the Brazilian.
Haddad Maia will face the winner of the match between American qualifier Bernarda Pera and Katie Boulter next, and will hope to avoid the stress that she suffered after being broken while serving for the match today.
