WTA Toronto: Boulter progresses into round three after just two games
Katie Boulter was through to the next round after just two games due to a retirement by Beatriz Haddad Maia (at 1-1) on Thursday
Katie Boulter reached the last 16 of the WTA National Bank Open when Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 13 seed, sadly retired on Thursday afternoon.
Boulter, ranked No 33, led 1-1 when Haddad Maia, ranked No 22, pulled out due to injury.
The Brit will face the winner of the match between Chinese Yue Yuan and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, next.
Boulter defeated American qualifier Bernarda Pera (6-4, 3-6, 6-1) in the previous round of the Rogers Cup.
In the first round of the WTA National Bank Open, the Brazilian edged out Marie Bouzkova (5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (1)).
