WTA Toronto: Azarenka ties record for most WTA 1000 hardcourt wins with victory over Minnen

The Belarusian will play Peyton Stearns in the next round

Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, the No 12 seed, beat Belgian qualifier Greet Minnen 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 to reach the last 16 of the WTA National Bank Open at the Aviva Centre on Thursday.

Azarenka, ranked No 19, will play Peyton Stearns next.

Ahead of her victory, the 35-year-old Belarusian won against Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (6-2, 6-2).

This was Azarenka’s 157th win in WTA 1000 series hardcourt events, tying the record with Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki.

Minnen, ranked No 74, won against American Sloane Stephens (6-2, 6-2) in the previous round of the Rogers Cup.
