Tokyo: Shnaider beats Tomova to reach last eight
The sixth seed will face the winner of the match between Japanese qualifier Sayaka Ishii and qualifier Zeynep Sonmez in the next round
Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 6 seed, beat Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova 6-2, 6-2 to move into the quarter-finals of the WTA Toray Pan Pacific Open at the Ariake Coliseum on Wednesday.
With the win, Shnaider improves to 2-0 lifetime against the Bulgarian. She also improves to 49-21 on the tour with this win.
Shnaider, ranked a career-high No 16, will play the winner of the match between Japanese qualifier Sayaka Ishii and qualifier Zeynep Sonmez next.
In the previous round of the tournament, Tomova, ranked No 49, won against defending champion Veronika Kudermetova, of Russia, (7-6 (3), 6-3). She drops to 1-19 against top 20 players in her career after this loss.
