Tokyo: Kenin upsets 10th seed Wang to move into second round
The American will face the winner of the match between Japanese wildcard Nao Hibino and Dane lucky loser Clara Tauson in the next round
American wildcard Sofia Kenin beat Chinese Xinyu Wang, the No 10 seed, 6-1, 6-4 to reach the second round of the WTA Toray Pan Pacific Open at the Ariake Coliseum on Tuesday.
The American improves to 4-0 lifetime (all in straight sets) against Wang, who recently reached the semi-finals of the Wuhan Open and won the silver in mixed doubles with Zheng Zhizhen at the recent Paris Olympics.
Kenin, ranked No 155, will face the winner of the match between Japanese wildcard Nao Hibino and Danish lucky loser Clara Tauson next. She had come into the event on a three-match losing streak.
