Tokyo: Boulter beats Andreescu to reach semi-finals

The Brit will play the winner of the match between American wildcard Sofia Kenin and Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 3 seed, for a spot in the final

Ninth seed Katie Boulter defeated Canadian wildcard Bianca Andreescu 6-2, 6-1 to reach the semi-finals of the WTA Toray Pan Pacific Open at the Ariake Coliseum on Friday.

Playing in her fourth quarter-final of the season, the Brit will be gunning for her third title of the season after winning in Nottingham and San Diego.

Boulter, ranked No 33, will play the winner of the match between American wildcard Sofia Kenin and Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 3 seed, next.

The Brit won against Australian qualifier Priscilla Hon (6-1, 6-4) and Japanese lucky loser Kyoka Okamura (6-1, 6-2) ahead of her win today. She improves to 3-0 lifetime against Canadians on the tour. This is also the best result by a British player in the tournament’s history.

Earlier in the week, Andreescu, ranked No 159, beat Japanese qualifier Mei Yamaguchi (7-5, 6-3) and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the second seed (3-0 ret.). This was the Canadian’s first loss to a British player on the tour, having won all six previous meetings against Brits.
