Latvian Darja Semenistaja, the No 8 seed, edged out Romanian Irina Bara 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (6) to move into the quarter-finals of the Tiriac Foundation Trophy on Thursday.
Semenistaja, ranked No 143, will face Romanian wildcard Anca Alexia Todoni next.
Ahead of her victory, the 20-year-old Latvian won against Berfu Cengiz (6-2, 6-2).
Bara, ranked No 185, defeated Italian qualifier Camilla Rosatello (7-5, 6-1) in the previous round.
