Valentina Ryser benefited from the abandonment of Ekaterina Makarova (6-4, 2-0) on Monday and will play the winner of the match between Belgian Marie Benoit and Swiss qualifier Leonie Kung in the next round

Swiss Valentina Ryser reached the last 16 of the Tiriac Foundation Trophy when Russian Ekaterina Makarova, the No 7 seed, retired on Monday afternoon.
Ryser, ranked No 241, led 6-4, 2-0 when Makarova, ranked No 162, pulled out on Monday.
The Swiss will face the winner of the match between Belgian Marie Benoit and Swiss qualifier Leonie Kung next.
