Thailand Open: Volynets recovers to sweep past Maria and into the quarter-finals
Katie Volynets beat Tatjana Maria 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 and will play the winner of the match between Anna Karolina Schmiedlova and Yafan Wang in the next round
American Katie Volynets reached the quarter-finals of the Thailand Open by winning against German Tatjana Maria, the No 4 seed, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 at the True Arena Hua Hin.
Volynets, ranked No 125, will play the winner of the match between Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, the No 8 seed, and Chinese Yafan Wang next.
The 22-year-old American beat Slovenian Tamara Zidansek (6-2, 6-2) in the previous round of the Hua Hin tournament.
During the first round of the Hua Hin tournament, Maria, ranked No 44, won against Dutch qualifier Arianne Hartono (6-3, 6-1).
