German Tatjana Maria, the No 4 seed, beat Dutch qualifier Arianne Hartono 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the second round of the Thailand Open at the True Arena Hua Hin.
Maria, ranked No 44, will play the winner of the match between Slovenian Tamara Zidansek and American Katie Volynets next.
