Thailand Open: Siegemund wins 4 hr, 9-minute thriller in longest women’s match since 2011
The German will meet the winner of the match between Chinese Xinyu Wang, the No 3 seed, and Spaniard Rebeka Masarova in the next round
German Laura Siegemund edged out Chinese Xiyu Wang, the No 5 seed, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-6 (1) in four hours and nine minutes to advance to the last eight of the Thailand Open on Wednesday.
This was the longest match of the 2024 season on the WTA Tour and is the first match to go beyond four hours on the women’s tour since 2011 (Francesca Schiavone defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova in the fourth round of the Australian Open 4-6, 6-1, 16-14 in 4 hours and 44 minutes).
Wang started the match by breaking early in the first set and led 4-2 before the German fought back to take the set in a tiebreaker. In the second, Wang again broke early to go up 2-0 and then again to go up 5-2 before wrapping up the set 6-4.
In the final set, it was Siegemund who broke early to lead 3-0. The German led 5-3 but Wang came back to level the match at 5-5 and push the match into a deciding set tiebreak. Siegemund dominated the tiebreak, winning seven of the eight points to win it 7-1.
Siegemund, ranked No 99, will play the winner of the match between Chinese Xinyu Wang, the No 3 seed, and Spaniard Rebeka Masarova next.
In the previous round, the 36-year-old German won against American Alycia Parks (6-4, 6-3).
Wang, ranked No 62, defeated Swiss Viktorija Golubic (7-5, 6-1) in the 32.
