German Tatjana Maria advanced to the quarter-finals of Tennis in the Land after Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, the No 5 seed, withdrew before the match in Cleveland.
Maria, ranked No 49, will play Canadian wildcard Leylah Fernandez next.
In the previous round, the 36-year-old German won against Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva (6-2, 2-6, 6-1).
Kalinina, ranked No 28, beat Romanian Ana Bogdan (6-2, 6-2) in the previous round.
