German Tatjana Maria advanced to the last 16 of the Tennis in the Land by winning against Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 at Cleveland’s Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica in Flats West Bank on Tuesday.
Maria, fresh off a challenger title in Barranquilla and ranked No 49, will face Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, the No 5 seed, next.
The 36-year-old, who is just three spaces from her career-high ranking of 46, has won six matches on the trot.
