Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No 4 seed, won against Belarusian qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-6 (2), 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of Tennis in the Land in Cleveland.
Alexandrova, ranked No 22, will play Chinese qualifier Xinyu Wang next.
Ahead of her victory, the Russian beat Romanian Patricia Maria Tig (6-1, 6-4).
Sasnovich, ranked No 68, edged out American Emma Navarro (3-6, 6-4, 7-5) in the previous round.
