Swiatek comes from behind to defeat inspired Noskova in Miami
Iga Swiatek edged out Linda Noskova 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday night and will face No 14 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the next round
Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, reached the last 16 of the Miami Open by edging out No 26 seed Linda Noskova 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-4 at the Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday night.
Swiatek was forced to do things the hard way against Noskova after dropping the opening set. At one stage the Pole was up 5-2, but lost the first set in a tiebreaker before winning the next two sets to claim the match in two hours, 33 minutes. Her first round match took just one hour, seven minutes.
“She’s really talented… I feel like as an underdog she can really just go for it,” said Swiatek after the match. “I know that feeling. She’s using it well. But on the other hand I have the experience I can use. You can see in these matches it kind of evens itself out… I’m happy I could overcome what came to me today.”
Swiatek, ranked No 1, will play No 14 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova next.
In the previous round of the Miami tournament, the 22-year-old Pole beat Italian Camila Giorgi (6-1, 6-1).
Noskova, ranked No 31, won against Russian qualifier Maria Timofeeva (6-4, 6-4) in the previous round of the Miami tournament.
