No 6 seed Marketa Vondrousova edged out Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the semi-finals of the Stuttgart Open at the Porsche-Arena.
The reigning Wimbledon champion overcame the reigning Australian Open champion with an excellent display in what was a topsy-turvy contest.
Vondrousova, ranked No 8, will face the winner of the match between Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk and American Coco Gauff, the No 3 seed, next.
Marketa Vondrousova won against Croat Donna Vekic (6-4, 6-3) and Russian Anastasia Potapova (7-6 (5), 6-1) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round of the Stuttgart tournament, Sabalenka, ranked No 2, benefited from the abandonment of Spaniard Paula Badosa (7-6 (4), 4-6, 3-3).
