Belgian Elise Mertens beat German wildcard Tatjana Maria 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 to move into the second round of the Stuttgart Open at the Porsche-Arena on Tuesday.
Mertens, ranked No 30, will play top seed Iga Swiatek next.
