Semenistaja wins title in Mumbai
The Latvian won her first-ever singles title on tour
Sixth seed Darja Semenistaja came from a set down in the Mumbai Open final to win her maiden WTA Tour title, beating Australia’s Storm Hunter 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-2.
The Latvian, currently hovering around her career-high ranking of 120, went into the tournament as sixth seed, but was pushed to three sets in both her opening matches.
Hunter had the opportunity to win her own first-ever singles title on tour had she capitalised on her lead in the second-set tiebreak. The 29-year-old is most often thought of as a doubles specialist, currently ranked the world No 3 in that discipline.
But ranked world No 150 in singles – at the moment – she did not drop a set in Mumbai before the final, albeit with two walkover wins in the round of 32 and in the quarter-final.
It follows a sound Australian Open campaign for her, coming through qualifying to reach the third round.
