Hampered by a bad back, Andreescu goes down to Rogers in San Jose
Andreescu to undergo an MRI scan to determine the extent oh her back injury
The run of bad luck continues for former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu as the Canadian was hampered by a back injury during her first round match at the San Jose Open on Tuesday night.
The 22-year-old, who missed all of 2020 due to various injuries, was defeated by American Shelby Rogers 6-4, 6-2.
Rogers, ranked No 45 in the world, will next meet top seed Maria Sakkari, of Greece.
Andreescu, now ranked 54th in the world, took a medical timeout after the first set for a lower back issue that she said had been bothering her for a few days and received more treatment in the second set.
It was later revealed that she would undergo an MRI scan to determine the extent of her injury and whether it would hamper the rest of the American summer swing for her.
Andreescu is now 12-8 for the season, which has been highlighted by a runner-up finish at the Bad Homburg Open on grass prior to Wimbledon.
