Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 9 seed, advanced to the quarter-finals of the San Jose Open by winning against American Claire Liu 6-2, 7-5 at San Jose State University Tennis Center on Thursday.
Kudermetova, ranked No 19, will face Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the No 3 seed, next.
The Russian edged out Italian Camila Giorgi (7-6 (2), 4-6, 7-5) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round, Liu, ranked No 79, beat Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia (6-2, 7-5).
