Croat Donna Vekic, the No 7 seed, won against Canadian qualifier Marina Stakusic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals of the San Diego Open at the Barnes Tennis Center on Thursday night.
Vekic, ranked No 28, will face Katie Boulter next.
The Croat beat American wildcard Katherine Hui (7-5, 6-2) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round of the San Diego tournament, Stakusic, ranked No 283, won against Russian qualifier Marina Melnikova (6-4, 5-7, 6-1).
