Swiatek maintains perfect record against Gauff, sets up Pegula clash in San Diego semis
Swiatek scores her 62nd win of the season and will take on fourth seed Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals
World No 1 Iga Swiatek maintained her perfect record against American teen Coco Gauff to advance to the semi-finals of the WTA San Diego Open on Friday evening.
In a rematch of their Roland-Garros final earlier this year, the Pole won the first eight games of the match before Gauff was able to get on the scoreboard.
Swiatek continued her mastery, not losing serve the entire match, which lasted one hour and five minutes, as she won 6-0, 6-3 to record her 62nd win on the WTA Tour this year.
This was Swiatek’s fourth win in as many matches over Gauff, and the Pole has won all eight sets the two have played against one another.
Swiatek leads Pegula rivalry by 3-1
In the semi-finals, Swiatek, a two-time Major winner in 2023, will face another American – the fourth seed Jessica Pegula.
Pegula scored a 6-4, 7-5 win over fellow American Madison Keys in another quarter-final on Friday.
Saturday’s semi-final clash will be the fifth career meeting between the two players. Swiatek leads Pegula 3-1 in head-to-head, having won their last three matches all in 2022, which came in the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros and the US Open, and the semi-finals in Miami.
