San Diego Open: Saville saves matchpoint to reach quarter-finals
The Australian will face the winner of the match between Katerina Siniakova and American Emma Navarro, the No 3 seed, in the next round
Australian qualifier Daria Saville moved into the quarter-finals of the San Diego Open by winning against German Tatjana Maria 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-2 at the Barnes Tennis Center on Wednesday.
The Australian saved a matchpoint late in the second set before coming back to win in a three-hour, 10-minute marathon.
Saville, ranked No 148, will face the winner of the match between Katerina Siniakova and American Emma Navarro, the No 3 seed, next. She had defeated Chinese Lin Zhu (6-3, 6-3) in the previous round of the tournament.
The Australian has won back-to-back main-draw matches on the tour for the first time since Hobart in January.
Earlier in the week, Maria, ranked No 47, benefited from the abandonment of Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 8 seed (6-7 (7), 4-0).
