Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 8 seed, defeated Canadian wildcard Leylah Fernandez 6-2, 6-2 to reach the second round of the San Diego Open at the Barnes Tennis Centre on Tuesday night.
Kasatkina, ranked No 11, will face American Madison Keys next.
