Collins upsets Badosa to reach San Diego semis; gets Vekic next
Danielle Collins scored the 10th top 10 win of her career with a straight-sets victory over Paula Badosa on Friday night
American Danielle Collins upset second seed Paula Badosa, of Spain, in straight sets on Friday night to reach the semi-finals of the San Diego Open at the Barnes Tennis Centre.
The 28-year-old, who reached the Australian Open final in January, won 7-6 (5), 6-4 in exactly two hours. This was her 10th career win over a top 10 player.
Collins has yet to drop a set this week in San Diego, beating Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 7 seed (6-2, 7-6 (4)) and Italian Martina Trevisan (6-2, 6-4) in earlier rounds.
Collins has a 1-0 lead over Vekic in head-to-head
Ranked No 19 in the world, Collins will play Croatian qualifier Donna Vekic for a place in the final. The American leads their head-to-head by 1-0, winning their round of 32 clash in Miami in 2018 in three sets.
Vekic continues her giant-killing run this week, beating third seed Aryna Sabalenka in three sets. That win came on the heels of her upset wins over fifth seed Maria Sakkari and former world No 1 Karolina Pliskova.
