San Diego Open: Boulter upsets second seed Haddad Maia to reach quarters
The Brit will meet the winner of the match between Croat Donna Vekic, the No 7 seed, and Canadian qualifier Marina Stakusic in the next round
Great Britain’s Katie Boulter edged out Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the second seed, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the last eight of the San Diego Open at the Barnes Tennis Center on Wednesday.
Boulter, ranked No 49, will play the winner of the match between Croat Donna Vekic, the No 7 seed, and Canadian qualifier Marina Stakusic next.
This is the first quarter-final for Boulter at a WTA 500 Series event or above. The win will take Boulter to a new career-high ranking in the world, currently projected to break into the world’s top 45 for the first time.
This was Boulter’s second Top 20 win of the season – she also defeated Jessica Pegula at the United Cup. For Haddad Maia, this was her fourth loss in a row on the tour.
The Brit won against Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko (6-3, 6-1) in the previous round of the San Diego tournament.
