San Diego: Boulter through to biggest final of career
The Brit will take on Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the final on Sunday
Great Britain’s Katie Boulter advanced to the final of the San Diego Open by beating American Emma Navarro, the No 3 seed, 6-3, 6-1 at the Barnes Tennis Center on Saturday.
Boulter, ranked No 49, will play Marta Kostyuk, the No 6 seed, in the final after the Ukrainian upset top seed Jessica Pegula in the other semi-final.
Ahead of her victory, Katie Boulter won against Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko (6-3, 6-1), Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the second seed (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) and Croat Donna Vekic, the No 7 seed (6-4, 6-3).
The win will also take the Brit to a new career-high ranking in the world on Monday, currently projected to break into the top 35 for the first time thanks to her run this week.
This is the Brit’s first singles final at the WTA 500 level and she will be hoping to make it a double celebration with boyfriend Alex de Minaur winning the ATP 500 title in Acapulco on Saturday.
Navarro, ranked No 26, defeated Katerina Siniakova (6-3, 3-6, 6-1) and Australian qualifier Daria Saville (6-4, 6-2) in the previous rounds of the San Diego tournament.
