Samsonova, Ostapenko closing in on top 10 spots – WTA rankings update
Aryna Sabalenka remains world No 1 but her lead has been cut by China Open champion Iga Swiatek
Liudmila Samsonova and Jelena Ostapenko were the big movers toward the top of the WTA rankings after successful weeks.
Samsonova’s run to the final at the China Open moved the Russian up six places to No 16, while Ostapenko, who beat Jessica Pegula in China before losing to Samsonova in the last eight, climbed four places to 13.
The top 10 remains unchanged, with Aryna Sabalenka staying at No 1, but she is now just 590 points ahead of Iga Swiatek, after the Pole took the title in China, her fifth of the year.
Further down, Jasmine Paolini, Xinyu Wang and Marta Kostyuk all rose five places, to No 31, 32 and 39 respectively. Lesia Tsurenko moved up six places to No 43, while Mirra Andreeva is into the top 50 for the first time, the 16-year-old rising 10 spots to the magic No 50 mark, having qualified and made the last 16 in China.
