Sabalenka pulls out of Charleston to rest injured leg
The world No 2 has elected to rest her body after suffering an injury in Miami last week.
When Aryna Sabalenka injured her hamstring during her second-round win over Shelby Rogers at the Miami Open, it wasn’t clear if she’d be able to carry on for the rest of the tournament.
Warrior that she is, Sabalenka soldiered on, reaching the quarter-finals at Miami, but she’ll need to take a breather now shat she’s been eliminated (loss to Sorana Cirstea, 6-4 6-4). Sabalenka took to Twitter on Thursday to announce that she’d be pulling out of next week’s Credit One Open in Charleston due to the injury.
“Sad to announce that I have to withdraw from Charleston,” Sabalenka wrote on Twitter. “I picked up an injury during one of my matches in Miami and I need time to rest and heal. I’m so sorry to the tournament and the fans.”
It’s a good time for the world No 2 to take stock of an excellent start to the season and get healthy again, before the clay season kicks in in Europe. The 24-year-old won her maiden major title in Australia in January and is currently 20-3 on the season, with an impressive 7-1 record against the top 20.
